Dhaka-- (UNB) – Power Development Board (PDB) has sent the proposal of Japanese Marubeni to the Energy Ministry for setting up a 450-megawatt power plant at Meghnaghat under the second phase, official sources said today.

If the ministry, like PDB, finds the proposal worth accepting, the bid will go to the Cabinet Purchase Committee for final approval. Four agreements will be signed if the committee accepts the proposal.

The PDB began negotiation with Marubeni Corporation in line with a decision of the Cabinet Purchase Committee. After long negotiations, PDB found the bid worth accepting.

In the first phase, the government had signed an agreement with AES of USA for a similar capacity power station at Meghnaghat. Marubeni was the second competitor in the first bidding.

As the government under its policy had a plan to set up four power stations in Meghnaghat, it later started negotiations with Marubeni for another plant with same price and condition it had with the AES.

Marubeni said it found some unrealistic clauses in the agreement signed with the AES and pointed out a big loophole relating to providing power free of cost from the US company.

PDB officials said while the AES offered a financial package of 36.65 US dollars Marubeni’s offer is 48.08 million dollars.
